As ultimate safeguard for the residents of Macondo, whose memories were fading, a sign was placed outside the town. The words on the sign: God exists.
A few years ago, I had the sign inked, in Greek, on my back:

it's a beautiful tatoo jeremy. can i ask why this post is called 'solitude'? did you take that picture yourself??
Posted by: bobbie at September 6, 2004 02:42 AMthanks, bobbie. the macondo account is from gabriel garcia marquez's book 100 years of solitude.
Posted by: jeremy at September 6, 2004 07:12 AMi've been wanting, for 2 years now, the tattoo of the hebrew word 'emeth' since that's what i've been looking for/questioning existence of. i'm still hesitant, thinking i'll change my mind when i'm 75.
this sunday's ny times magazine has a picture of a biola undergrad with hebrew tattooing down one arm.
i saw that, ck. i'll be content with the hebrew on my upper arm, for now. for me, it's when i'm 75 that i think i'll want the reminders the most.
Posted by: jeremy at September 6, 2004 05:37 PMwhat are the actual greek words? (i'm not very good at reading backs or lowercase greek.)
Posted by: emily jane at September 6, 2004 07:32 PMphonetically, "ha thay-OSS ESS-tin", "God is (exists)."
Posted by: jeremy at September 6, 2004 07:37 PMi like that. don't know why this made me think of it, but do you know the inscription on the fountain of purification at hagia sophia? now that would make a great tattoo.
Posted by: amys at September 7, 2004 11:09 AMThanks, J.C. I've been waiting a long time for you to interpret your tatoo.
