I hadn't felt too old until today, when I saw a flyer for an essay competition, from which I was disqualified for being too old. For the rest of you, you might want to check it out: The Twentysomething Essays by Twentysomething Writers Contest. Grand prize of $20,000 and not-as-grand, but still pretty cool, prize of publication in a book titled Twentysomething Essays by Twentysomething Writers: The Best New Voices of 2006. I'd like to type "twentysomething" once more to remind myself of my mortality.

just hit 30 myself. three kids, thirty years, that realization hasn't yet hit, except when my back hurts when i try to throw one of the little ones.

Posted by: Jason at May 2, 2005 01:05 PMjason, it hits me when i try to throw a frisbee.
Posted by: jeremy at May 2, 2005 02:24 PMha. i still have 2 years.
Posted by: amyd at May 2, 2005 02:50 PMwell, miss fountain of youth, i suggest you stop making fun of the old guys and start writing an essay.
Posted by: jeremy at May 2, 2005 03:59 PMGeez, I felt old at 26 when I couldn't try out for American Idol. They upped the age to 28 but I'm still out. Now I'll never be a superstar. Damn you, ageism.
Posted by: emily at May 2, 2005 04:21 PMThanks for the tip, J.
They didn't exclude you because of age. They excluded you because they wanted us unexperienced kids to have a chance.
Btw, I'm going be passing through Spokane sometime on the 13th. Wanna meet me at the bus station for a coffee?
Posted by: daniel silliman at May 2, 2005 06:41 PMWhatever it takes to make me feel better, Daniel. Many thanks. Man, Spokane bus station coffee--damn straight. E-mail me the specs?
Posted by: jeremy at May 2, 2005 09:17 PMyes sir. I'm on it.
Posted by: amyd at May 3, 2005 05:48 AMOh, yea, and verily... I agree with feeling old as I participate in a writers group every Monday night which consists of single "twentysomething" writers (me being the exception).
Posted by: Matt Mulder at May 3, 2005 07:34 AMI'd just like to say...
I'll be twenty-one on Thursday.
I guess I've got about nine more years of being a twentysomething...I'd better start enjoying it, huh?
Posted by: emily jane at May 3, 2005 09:00 AMem, you're a superstar in my book, though it be a flimsy, self-published book.
congrats, ej. i had my 21st in starkville, and despite downing a 40 with karl petersen, it was a good day.
Posted by: jeremy at May 3, 2005 11:39 PMi wanna check out the contest, but the link is kaput, at least for me. what's the URL?
Posted by: justin at May 4, 2005 12:47 AM20by20essays.com
justin, sorry about that. not sure what the deal is. i suppose you'll just have to type in 20by20essays.com. and thanks, mr./mrs. editor--very kind.
Posted by: jeremy at May 4, 2005 09:52 AM* don't feel old. feel wise.
Posted by: jane. at May 4, 2005 08:56 PMHarruumph! I'm 67 and feel younger every day. My youngest son recently disowned me, calling me immature and childish. Here I go and spend most of my life escaping the claustrophobic atmosphere of the 50's when I went through my teens and, then, I'm confronted on the other end by the issue of my loins becoming what I escaped. Life is certainly unexpected.
